Hello and welcome to another episode of Tale of the Tape. I'm Matt Tempelis, president of Engineered Materials and your Minister of tape.

Today, I'd like to talk to you a little bit about the most common types of pressure sensitive adhesives and the advantages of using pressure sensitive adhesive tapes. The most common pressure sensitive adhesives that you'll see in the market today are rubber based pressure sensitive adhesives and acrylic based pressure sensitive adhesives. Those aren't the only ones. There are also silicone pressure sensitive adhesives as well as butyl. Again, a little bit more specialty on each one of those and a little less common. But again, those are available in the market as well.

Within this broad range of the four categories, each of the individual categories has a variety of characteristics and attributes that allow it to perform in a variety of different fashions.

  • Rubber based generally speaking, we're talking about lighter duty, quick stick, indoor applications.

  • Acrylic, a broad range of applications from very temporary or removable, all the way up to permanent and high strength.

  • Silicone you want to use for high temperature and silicone rubber, typically bonding to silicone rubber.

  • Butyls are usually low cost, lower performance type products.

Generally, the benefits of using pressure sensitive adhesives is they're consistent, they're easy to use. It's literally a peel and stick type of situation. So super easy, always a consistent thickness versus what you might get from the liquid adhesive. And they stay flexible. Pressure sensitive adhesive stay very flexible, viscoelastic through a broad range of temperatures and there's a lot of different use cases for them. Lastly, you can cut them to shape. You could slit them to width and use them for your specific application requirements.

So that's a little bit about pressure sensitive adhesives, what kinds and their advantages. Join us next time on Tale of the Tape. Remember, at Engineered Materials we are the 3M Preferred converter. We'll look to see you next time. Thank you.
